Occupational Hygiene Services

Helping Canberra workplaces understand and control health hazards

Occupational hygiene focuses on anticipating, recognising, evaluating and controlling workplace health hazards. Monitoring can help a business understand whether workers are being exposed to airborne contaminants, excessive noise or other hazards and whether existing controls are working effectively.

2HEM works with clients to define the problem, develop an appropriate monitoring strategy, collect representative data and turn the results into practical actions.

What We Can Assess

Occupational hygiene services for Canberra & ACT

Monitoring should be matched to the workplace, tasks, materials and potential exposure pathways. 2HEM can assist with a range of occupational and environmental health hazards.

Silica Dust Monitoring

Personal and workplace air monitoring to assess respirable crystalline silica exposure and help evaluate the effectiveness of dust controls.

Welding Fume Monitoring

Exposure monitoring for welding fumes and relevant airborne contaminants to support risk assessment and control verification.

Workplace Air Monitoring

Monitoring for dusts, fumes, vapours and other airborne contaminants where worker exposure needs to be understood or controls verified.

Noise Assessment

Workplace noise surveys and exposure assessment to identify high-noise tasks, support risk management and inform practical controls.

Hazardous Materials

Hazardous-materials advice, surveys and risk-management support where appropriate. ACT-specific asbestos work is subject to the Territory's licensing requirements.

Occupational Hygiene Consulting

Exposure-risk reviews, monitoring strategies, interpretation of results and practical recommendations for improving workplace health controls.

Canberra Workplaces

Support across construction, government, industry and services

Workplace exposure risks can arise in many settings. Monitoring and occupational hygiene advice can be particularly useful where tasks generate dust, fumes, vapours or noise, where work practices change, or where a business needs objective information about the performance of its controls.

  • Commercial construction
  • Civil infrastructure
  • Government facilities
  • Maintenance & trades
  • Manufacturing & workshops
  • Demolition & refurbishment
  • Education & institutional sites
  • Property & facilities management

Why Monitoring Matters

Measure the hazard. Check the controls. Make informed decisions.

Air monitoring is not itself a control measure. It provides evidence that can help determine the level of exposure and whether controls are performing as intended.

A useful occupational hygiene program connects monitoring results with the actual task, worker, controls and workplace conditions.

Our Approach

From workplace question to practical action

The right monitoring strategy starts with understanding why testing is required and what decision the results need to support.

01

Define the workplace issue

We discuss the site, tasks, materials, workers, existing controls and the reason monitoring or assessment is required.

02

Plan the assessment

A monitoring approach is developed to collect information that is relevant to the exposure question and workplace conditions.

03

Undertake site monitoring

Representative monitoring and observations are completed while considering tasks, duration, controls and potential exposure pathways.

04

Report and recommend

Results are interpreted and presented with practical recommendations to help manage exposure and improve controls where required.

ACT Workplace Requirements

Occupational hygiene in the ACT regulatory environment

ACT workplaces operate under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011. For airborne contaminants such as respirable crystalline silica, air monitoring can be required where there is uncertainty about exposure or a risk that the applicable exposure limit may be exceeded.

WorkSafe ACT states that silica air monitoring should be conducted by a competent person and that monitoring results can be used to assess exposure and the effectiveness of controls.

ACT asbestos requirements are also important to distinguish from NSW requirements. Certain asbestos identification, risk assessment, air monitoring and clearance work in the ACT can only be undertaken by an ACT licensed asbestos assessor. Project scope should therefore be confirmed before asbestos-related work is booked.

Common reasons to seek occupational hygiene support

  • Potential exposure to silica, dust, fumes or vapours
  • Uncertainty about whether controls are effective
  • New plant, materials or work processes
  • High-noise tasks or changing work environments
  • Worker or management concerns about exposure
  • A need for objective data to support risk management

Yes. 2HEM is based in Wagga Wagga and services suitable occupational hygiene and environmental consulting projects in Canberra and the ACT. Contact us to confirm availability, travel and the scope required for your site.
Occupational hygiene assessments can address workplace health hazards such as airborne dust, silica, welding fumes, vapours, noise and other exposure risks. The assessment method depends on the hazard, task, workplace and reason for monitoring.
2HEM can discuss silica exposure and air-monitoring requirements for Canberra workplaces. ACT requirements differ in some respects from NSW, so the monitoring strategy should be based on the work being performed and the applicable ACT requirements.
Air monitoring may be appropriate where the level of worker exposure is uncertain, where there is concern an applicable exposure limit could be exceeded, or where a workplace needs evidence about the effectiveness of controls. The circumstances should be assessed before deciding on a monitoring program.
ACT asbestos work has specific licensing requirements. WorkSafe ACT states that asbestos identification, risk assessment, asbestos air monitoring, clearance inspections and clearance certificates fall within the scope of an ACT licensed asbestos assessor. Contact 2HEM with the proposed scope so the applicable licensing requirements can be confirmed before work is scheduled.
